     Jean-Baptiste Lully   (1632 - 1687)  was the court composer for Louis XIV of France.  He 
                                                                 wrote the greatest French operas of the 17th century.

Violin composers

     Johann Heinrich Schmelzer   (c. 1622 –  1680) was an Austrian composer and violinist 
                                                                                 of the Middle Baroque era. 

     Giovanni Legrenzi (1626 – 1690) -  an Italian composer of operas, vocal and instrumental 
                                                               music.  His violin sonatas are popular today. 

     Heinrich Biber  (1644–1704)  -  Bohemian -  Early violin sonatas 


     Arcangelo Corelli  (1653 - 1713) -  Italian -  Inventor of the Concerto Grosso


     Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni  (1671 – 1751)  Versatile Italian composer mostly known today 
                                                                           for his concertos.


     Antonio Vivaldi  (1678 - 1741)  Italian - Violin concertos


     Francesco Geminiani  (1687 - 1762)  -  Italian  -  Popular in London for his concerti grossi 

     Giuseppe Tartini (1692 – 1770)  -  Italian composer of over a hundred of pieces for the violin 
                                                            with the majority of them being violin concertos.  However, 
                                                            today, he is most remembered for his Violin Sonata in G 
                                                            Minor, "Devil's Trill."

     Jean-Marie Leclair   (1697 – 1764)  -  The father of the French violin school

     Marin Marais  (1656 - 1728) - important French viol composer.
